The legislation would add to HR-2 policies passed in the House.
Senators Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Tom Cotton of Arkansas, and James Lankford of Oklahoma have submitted a proposal for legislation that would support tighter migrant restrictions passed by the House.
The House passed a bill called HR-2 in May that would require asylum seekers to be detained or returned to their countries after they file their asylum claim in the United States, a policy that has little support among the Senate’s majority. However, senators in the minority party are still interested in tailoring HR-2’s language to pass their chamber, including the continuation of Southern border wall construction.
The three senators’ proposal stated, “These solutions, drawn from those found in HR-2, prioritize the concrete and significant policy reforms that are most critical to securing the border.”
